Doğan Güreş

Doğan Güreş (* 1926 in Adana ) is a former Turkish general, who was most recently 1990-1994 Chief of General Staff ( Genelkurmay Başkanı ) of the Turkish Armed Forces ( Türk Silahlı Kuvvetleri ).

Life

After visiting the Kuleli - cadet school Güreş entered 1945 in the Military School ( Harp Okulu ), from which he graduated in 1947 as a second lieutenant of the troop transport. He attended military school transport ( Ulaştırma Sınıf Okulu ) and was after the end of 1949-1963 platoon leader and company commander in various military units. In 1963, he joined as an officer in the listener a military academy ( Harp Akademisi ) and found after the end of 1965 as an officer and staff officer used in several units.

1973 Güreş was promoted to brigadier general and appointed Chief of Army Office, before he subsequently worked in the logistics department of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe ( SHAPE) in Mons NATO. After that, he was deputy chief of the Armed Forces Office and subsequently commander of the Armor School and commander of a training brigade.

After his promotion to major general in 1977, he retained the office of the commander of the Armor School and was also commander of the Training Division. 1981 saw his promotion to Lieutenant General and head of the personnel department of the General Staff of Turkey, before he subsequently Commanding General of III. Corps.

After he was promoted to general in 1985, he became first commander of the Military Academy and was then as successor to General Reception Orhan Ergun between 1987-1989 commander of the 1st Army. On August 23, 1989 Güreş successor of General Kemal Yamak as Supreme Commander of the Land Forces ( Türk Kara Kuvvetleri ).

He was last on 6 December 1990 as the successor of General Necip Torumtay Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces. It was contrary to the usual pension scheme to an extension of the term of office by Prime Minister Tansu Çiller before he stepped on his own request on 30 August 1994 to retire.

In the elections of December 24, 1995 Güreş was elected as a candidate of the guided Çiller of the True Path Party ( Yol Partisi Doğru ) for members of the Grand National Assembly and was one of these after his re-election in the parliamentary elections on April 18, 1999 to November 3,, 2002.
