Dohuk

Dohuk (Arabic دهوك, DMG Dahuk, Kurdish: دهۆك, Duhok, Aramaic: ܢ ܘ ܗ ܕ ܪ ܐ, Nohadra ) is the capital of Dahuk Governorate in the autonomous region of Kurdistan in Iraq.

The city has about 283,000 inhabitants. It is 585 m high and 470 km from Baghdad away. The name of Dohuk in Kurdish means " little village ". The city is also home to a university. Making it one of the three Kurdish universities in northern Iraq.

History

The rise of the city began in 1236, when Hasan Beg Saifadin itself joined the Badinan principality. 1842, the principality was dissolved by the Ottomans and connected the city of Mosul. In 1898 there were, according to a report eleven small and private schools in the city, two Christian and two Jewish schools. 1920 there were throughout Iraq only five elementary schools that were accessible for girls, and one of them was in Dohuk.

From 22 to 24 September 2005 took place for the first time in Dohuk held a cultural festival, were invited to the Kurdish writers from all countries.

Sports

The local football club SC Dohuk currently plays in the highest Iraqi Football League. In 2010 the club was able for the first time in their history to win the championship.
