Dolar Popat

Dolar Popat, Baron Popat ( born June 14, 1953 in Busolwe, Uganda ) is a British businessman and politician with Indian roots. In July 2010 he became a member of the British House of Lords as a life peer and was thus the first Gujarati who represents the Conservatives in the House of Lords. He emigrated in 1971 during the expulsion of Asians from Uganda to the UK. He is president of the Conservatives in Harrow East constituency and is a member and advisor to several Asian groups within the Conservatives.

Life

Popat was born in Busolwe and grew up in Tororo / Uganda. He has seven siblings. The roots of family lying in the Indian state of Gujarat, where his father Shree Haridas Amarshibhai Popat and his mother Parvatiben Amarshibhai Popat were born. Popats father left India in 1938 to emigrate to Uganda.

Popat moved in 1971 to the United Kingdom, a year before many Indians were expelled from Uganda. He financed his education at the Kilburn Polytechnic odd jobs as a dishwasher, waiter and chef at Wimpey on the Kilburn High Street. In 1977 he qualified as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants ( CIMA ).

After his studies, Popat made ​​on a tax consultant and auditor, and worked in this profession since the 1970s, where he specialized in advising business enterprises.

In the late 1980s, he took on the additional mandates in the health sector and since the 1990s in the hotel industry, spending a major concession for Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express in the UK secured.

Policy

Popat since the 1980s has been actively connected with the Conservative party by serving two Conservative prime ministers Margaret Thatcher and John Major. During this time he acted more strongly bind to the party as a consultant with the activities of the conservatives, minorities and marginalized groups.

On 12 July 2010 Popat, on the recommendation of the leader of the Conservative Party, David Cameron, knighted for his services to small and medium-sized enterprises and the wider society. He took the title " Lord Popat of Harrow ", because his parents lived in Harrow, after they came to Britain. On 31 March 2011 he held during a debate on economic growth his maiden speech in the House of Lords.

Private

Popat is Hindu and follows the teachings of Morari Bapu, he speaks four languages ​​including Gujarati, Hindi, and Swahili. He married Lukka Sandhya on 19 July 1980, the couple has three sons: rupees, Paavan and Shivaan.
