Dom João de Castro Bank

The Dom João de Castro is a shoal about 35 nautical miles at the Azores. It is located 35 nautical miles from the island of Terceira and 38 nautical miles from the island of São Miguel. The bank rises about 1000 m above the seabed to 13 m below the water depth. There are volcanic and geothermal sources here.

In 1720 was built here a 1500 m long and 250 m high island of volcanic ash, which disappeared again after two years.
