History

The name Leflaive can be traced back to the 16th century in Burgundy. The first documentation about viticulture are from 1717 and the then owner was Claude Leflaive. The winery has developed well, but by the usual in Burgundy Succession the estate was broken up largely over time.

Joseph Leflaive (1870 - 1953) eventually inherited only 2 acres. At first he cared little about the wine and pursued a career in shipbuilding. In Saint- Étienne, he was plant manager and was also involved in the construction of the first submarine in France. However Leflaive watched the wine market in Burgundy attention and bought from the 1905 released Rebparzellen that were sold by the phylloxera disaster and the subsequent fungal diseases (powdery mildew, downy mildew ) at very low prices. Overall, Joseph enlarged his estate on 25 acres.

In 1920, Joseph Leflaive launched a broad-based program with grafted on rootstocks precious vines. In addition, he began with the self-promotion of his wines, which he previously sold to the local trade. After the death of Joseph Leflaive in 1953, the Domaine Leflaive was run by his sons Vincent Leflaive and Jo Leflaive. The brothers were responsible for the way to the top of the properties on the Côte de Beaune. In 1973, the estate was converted into a company in order to avoid fragmentation through inheritance. The family, meanwhile, is the owner of the operating company.

In 1990, the daughter of Vincent, Anne -Claude Leflaive, as well as her cousin Olivier Leflaive took over the management of the estate. Since Olivier also runs a wine trading company, took over Anne -Claude, after a decision of the family council, the management of the daily business of Domaine Leflaive. Since 1997, the products according to the rules of Biodynamic agriculture are produced.
