It is located in the Mount Baker - Snoqualmie National Forest, just outside of North Cascades National Park. He is completely in the wilderness sanctuary Glacier Peak Wilderness, the strictest class of protected natural areas in the United States.

The Dome Peak is the southern end of the Ptarmigan Traverse, a mountain trail from the Skagit River through the Cascade Pass in the National Park into the catchment area of Lake Chelan that receives inland a historically important connection of the native Indians of the coast.

As the whole of the northern Cascade Range Dome Peak is barely tapped, there is no road connection to the vicinity of the mountain, so that a long march is required. This seclusion and the height make the mountain out of the way, so it is a rare target of mountaineers in the Cascade Range.
