Dominic Benhura

Dominic Benhura ( * 1968 in Murewa ) is an artist from Zimbabwe. He gained international fame as a sculptor.

Dominic Benhura grew up with his mother without a father in Murewa on. There he attended primary school with good results. Then his uncle Sekuru Gutsa brought him to Tafara, a suburb of Harare, where he was able to visit a high school and came into contact with the sculpture. In his artistic development, he was here by his cousin Tapfuma Gutsa, a famous sculptor of the country affected. In his youth, he was already on Chapungu Sculpture Park in Harare, which belongs to Chapungu Sculpture Centre.

His artistic development is associated with a large variety of motives. Among his works find plants, trees, reptiles, animals and compositions with which emotions are expressed without a human face. His sculptural work is in the traditions of the Shona sculptures. This is based on the processing of some regionally occurring silicate rocks (soapstone, serpentinite, greenschist facies ), sometimes referred to in sub-Saharan Africa as Verdite.

He International appearances at workshops in Australia, Botswana, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and in the United States.

Dominic Benhura working with natural stone and metal and is in Zimbabwe, a well-known artist who today is also concerned with the training of young. On December 27, 2007, he took over the management of Tengenenge Art Community by its founder Tom Blomefield.
