Dominique Peyramale

Marie -Dominique Peyramale ( born January 9, 1811 in Momères, Hautes -Pyrénées, † September 8, 1877 in Lourdes ) was a Roman Catholic priest at Lourdes, France during the apparitions of 1858, when a lady, who later as the " Immaculate Conception "To recognize, gave the 14 - year-old girl and later Saint Bernadette Soubirous appeared.

Biography

Peyramale was born in 1811 as the fourth child of Dr. Peyramale in Momères. His ordination to the priesthood in 1835 and as a chaplain he was ordered in the parish of Vic -en- Bigorre. Two years later he took over as parish priest, the parish of St. John in Tarbes. From 1851 Peyramale chaplain of the Hospice in Tarbes. 1854, he was transferred instead to Vic -en- Bigorre in the smaller Lourdes, where he gained a reputation for his generosity. In Lourdes arrived to Peyramale devoted to the plans for the renewal of the medieval parish church, which he wanted to expand. His plan failed, partly due to the lack of urgency of a new building, on the other hand, to the costs incurred.

Between 11 February and 16 July 1858 finally found the total of 18 Marian apparitions in the " Grotto of Massabielle " place outside the city. Marie -Dominique Peyramale was not on directives of the bishop of the phenomena which befell the girl Bernadette Soubirous. Nevertheless, he sent out Jean -Baptiste dais to observe the events. Because of a hoax Peyramale long remained skeptical and reluctant girls to the set, but he supported it at the crucial moment: He pointed Bernadette, the lady to ask for their names. At the 16th meeting, the lady is on the question of their names with the words "Que soy era Immaculada Conceptiou " ("I am the Immaculate Conception" ) have responded. Since Peyramale assumed that the Soubirous could know nothing because of their poor education from four years previously proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, the priests rule out false reports and began to defend the phenomena.

Marie -Dominique Peyramale responsible in a row to start the pilgrimage to Lourdes and from 1862. The area around the cave was purchased by the bishop and a chapel was built on the rock above. On August 4, 1864, the first procession from the parish went back to the cave, where Monsignor Laurence blessed the statue of the Holy Virgin. In Peyramales life time, the establishment of the St. Mary's Basilica fell from 1866 to 1871. The parish eventually lost control of the pilgrimage in the diocese.

The priest in 1874 by Pope Pius IX. awarded the title of abbot. Peyramale could begin building the new parish church in Lourdes, their completion, he did not live. Marie -Dominique Peyramale died on 8 September 1877.
