Don Mumford

Don Mumford ' ( born February 9, 1954 in Lawrence ( Kansas) as Donald Dean Mumford, † July 6, 2007 in Des Moines, Iowa) was an American jazz drummer and percussionist.

Don Mumford was best known for his collaboration with pianist Abdullah Ibrahim. Previously, he was active in the music scene of Portland ( Oregon). His mentors included Mel Brown and Jim Pepper. Before leaving Oregon, he was playing with various bands such as Red Beans and Rice and Carl Smith 's Natural Gas Company. In the 1980s he went with Abdullah Ibrahim and Essiet Okon Essiet to numerous African and European tours and has participated in their Enja album Zimbabwe ( 1984) with; He also worked with Sun Ra, with whom he appeared in Athens in 1984, among other things (Live at practice '84 ). In the same year he participated in Archie Shepp and Jeanne Lee's album African Moods. Mumford died at the age of 53 years in Des Moines, Iowa at the consequences of a bicycle accident.
