Don Touhig

James Donnelly " Don " Touhig, Baron Touhig, of Islwyn and Glansychan in the County of Gwent PC KSS ( born December 5, 1947 in Abersychan, Monmouthshire, Wales ) is a British journalist and politician of the Labour Party, which for 15 years the constituency Islwyn as an MP in the House of Commons represented and since 2010 a member of the House of Lords.

Life

Journalist, local politicians and unsuccessful House candidate

After visiting the St Francis School in Abersychan studied journalism at Coleg Gwent Touhig in Pontypool and then worked 1968-1992 as a journalist and editor.

The mid-1970s began Touhig, in 1962 a member of the Transport and General Workers ' Union ( TGWU ) and 1966, the Labour Party joined, his political career in local politics and from 1973 to 1995 Member of the Council of Gwen County and most recently between 1992 and 1994 Chairman of the Finance Committee.

In the general election on 9 April 1992 ran Touhig, who was from 1992 to 1995 Managing Director of Printing Bailey print, in the constituency of Richmond and Barnes for a parliamentary seat in the House of Commons, thereby however, ended up 5.8 percent of the vote relegated to third place.

He was most recently between 2009 and 2010 Chairman of the House Committee on Members remuneration.

After Touhig was excreted after the general election on 6 May 2010 from the House of Commons, he was raised as a life peer with the title Baron Touhig, of Islwyn and Glansychan in the County of Gwent on 30 June 2010 to the peerage, and has since member of the House of Lords. In addition, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of New Year's Eve.
