Donald Akenson

Donald Harman Akenson ( May 22nd, 1941 in Minneapolis, Minnesota) is an American historian and writer.

Life

Akenson was born on 22 May 1941 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He studied at Yale University History and graduated from there with a Bachelor of Arts, to be his doctorate at Harvard University. Akenson is Professor of History at Queen 's University in Kingston, Ontario, and Beamish Research Professor at the Institute of Irish Studies at the University of Liverpool and a senior editor at McGill - Queen's University Press.

To date, he has not written fiction, scientific monographs, among others, eighteen, of which about a dozen on the history of Ireland, and five novels.

Akenson won the 1992 Grawemeyer Award for God's Peoples and the 1994 Trillium Book Award for Conor: The Biography of Conor Cruise O'Brien. His book about the Bible, Surpassing Wonder: The Invention of the Bible and the Talmud (1998) was shortlisted for the 1999 Canadian Governor General 's Award for nonfiction.

In addition, Donald Akenson member of the Royal Society of Canada and the Royal Historical Society of the United Kingdom.
