Donald Fisher

Donald George Fisher ( born September 3, 1928 in Cutsdean, California, † 27 September 2009 in San Francisco, California ) was an American entrepreneur. He was co-founder of Gap Inc.

Life

Fisher grew up in California in a Jewish family. He studied from 1946 to 1951 Business Administration at the University of California, Berkeley. He was an active sportsman of the university teams in swimming and water polo. He also belonged to the fraternity Delta Kappa Epsilon.

In 1969, Fisher and his wife Doris, the fashion company Gap Inc., which rose to become the largest U.S. clothing retailer.

Charity

Fisher was known as a collector of contemporary art, including works by Andy Warhol, Alexander Calder, Roy Lichtenstein, Ellsworth Kelly, Gerhard Richter, Anselm Kiefer, Chuck Close and Claes Oldenburg. The plans of Mr. and Mrs. Fisher, to be able to exhibit the collection in the National Park of the Presidio near the Golden Gate Bridge, failed in 2009. Alternatively, the couple decided with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art exhibition opportunities to complete an agreement.

Fisher also was involved in the educational program of the Edison Schools.
