The National University of Donetsk (Ukrainian Донецький Національний Університет, English Donetsk National University, abbr DonNU ) is a Ukrainian university in Donetsk, Donetsk Oblast.

History

The university was founded on 1 July 1937 as State Pedagogical Institute by decree of the Ukrainian SSR. Founding Rector was Olexandr Jewdokymenko who was imprisoned in 1938 in the Stalinist purges for ten years. The university initially had two faculties ( History and Philology ) and five chairs.

Between 1940 and 1961 College of Serhiy Ksenofotnow was then led by Mykola Choroschajlow. (: National Wassyl - Karasin University Kharkiv today ) annexed in 1964, the Institute of the State University of Kharkiv was. By decree of the Soviet Union ( USSR), the Institute was established in 1965 to operate independently and as Donetsk State University; first director was Professor Leonid Lytwynenko ( 1965-1968 ).

In 1965, the faculties of Biology and Physics were opened, first offered postgraduate programs and built a student campus.

Under the aegis of Directors Yuri Schewljakowas (1968-1970) and Hryhoryj Tymoshenko (1970-1975) built the 12-storey main building as well as the University Museum. The directors Hryhoryj Ponomarenko (1975-1986) and Volodymyr Shevchenko ( since 1986) forced the further development of the University. On 11 September 2000 was renamed by decree of the President of Ukraine in the Donetsk National University.

University

The National University of Donetsk is a member of the Eurasian University Association and the European University Association (EUA ). The university collaborates with universities in USA, UK, France, Germany, Greece, Czech Republic, Hungary, China and Poland.

The National University of Donetsk offers in 12 faculties and five university institutes bachelor's and master's degrees in 33 disciplines in the field of natural sciences, humanities and economics. The University had 2003/2004 more than 900 professors and lecturers, including three members of the National Ukrainian Academy of Sciences ( NAS).
