About the image has been much speculation. Until the 17th century it was generally only as a devotional image, showing how Joseph Mary, who has just finished her reading, the Christ child is enough. Only then tried to see in the picture an allegory. So is the main group in the foreground for the Catholic Church are available during the file in the background, which are interpreted by some as fauns, represent symbols of classical antiquity. Other researchers see in the figures in the background, an allegory of the age, and thus alludes to the transience of life. Also, attempts are made to recognize different symbols in the image. So, for example, should the file in the background, representing the humanity ante Legem, Mary and Joseph, the humanity sub Lege and the Christ Child, the humanity sub Gratia. It has also been suggested that Michelangelo has the name of Agnolo Doni, for whom he painted the panel, shown in the encrypted image by Maria Joseph asks her to give her child ( Dono = gift ).

Equally controversial is the time of the creation. Vasari wrote in 1550 that the image before Bacchus, now in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello is, originated in Florence. In the edition of 1568 he revised this view and argues for a later date of composition. Around 1893, it is dated by Grimm to the year 1503. Giovanni Poggi introduced in 1907 on the thesis that the presence of the coat of arms of the Strozzi on the frame is a sure sign that the image has been painted as a wedding gift for Antonio Maddalena Strozzi Doni with.
