Dorand AR

The Dorand AR.1 was a French military aircraft.

The AR.1 goes back to the do.1 the same designer, from 1914 some machinery should go to Russia, what the outbreak of war but prevented; the aircraft were incorporated into the French air forces. But they proved as a whole with little success and were soon replaced by the Farman pusher propeller machines.

When these were increasingly outdated from 1916 and replacement was necessary, most French aircraft company still could not make friends with the use of tractor propellers in two-seat aircraft. The then under the leadership of Dorand Related Section Technique de l' Aéronautique ( STAe. ) in Chalais - Meudon then developed from the do.1 as an example the construction AR.1 A2.

The pattern had some unusual design features, such as negative staggered wings and one lying on struts above the lower wing fuselage. The powerplant was the only time available in larger numbers in-line engine of Renault, who received a front radiator and exhaust manifold on the upper wing.

In September 1916, the trials were completed and the AR.1 was from April 1917 in use. Later came the more advanced AR.2. Both patterns were but underpowered and were withdrawn from the units of the Western Front in 1918. In addition to the French air force and the American Expeditionary Forces 22 AR.1 and 120 AR.2 had acquired.
