Doreen Norton

Doreen Norton OBE ( born May 1, 1922 in Dartford, † 30 December, 2007 Worthing ) was a British nurse. Norton developed in the 1950s, named after their Norton scale to assess PU risk.

Life

Norton left school at the age of 14 and worked in the company of her father before she trained as a nurse. After the completion of training in 1946, Norton specialized first for tuberculosis patients, but then turned to geriatrics. She attended the Royal College of Nursing in London and completed a station line course. Norton worked intensively on the causes and prevention of pressure sores in geriatric patients. In 1962 she published her book An Investigation of Geriatric Nursing Problems in Hospital, in which Norton published her point scale to assess PU risk. This developed in Germany the best known tools for assessing PU risk.

Norton was awarded a research fellowship at the Department of Nursing at the University of Edinburgh, and obtained in 1969 the degree of Master of Science. Then Norton worked at the Scottish Home and Health Department.

From 1975 to 1978 Norton was the first chairman of the newly formed Society of Geriatric Nursing.

1982 Norton retired from nursing and took a visiting professorship at the Department of Geronotological Nursing at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

Awards

1976 Norton was appointed a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing, one year later, in 1977, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire. In 2003, she appointed the University of the South Bank in London as an honorary member, the Lewisham University Hospital named a geriatric ward to Norton, the Doreen Norton station.
