Doris McCarthy

Doris McCarthy ( * July 7, 1910 in Calgary, Alberta, † November 25, 2010 in Scarborough, Ontario) was a Canadian painter who specialized in abstract landscapes.

Life

McCarthy attended the Ontario College of Art from 1926 to 1930, where she won prizes and received various scholarships. She became a teacher and was from 1932 until her retirement in 1972 at the Central Technical School in Toronto. Most of the time she spent in Scarborough ( Toronto today circle). She traveled a lot and painted landscapes of various countries, such as Costa Rica, Spain, Italy, Japan, India, England and Ireland. Most famous were their images of Canadian landscapes and Arctic icebergs. In 1989 she graduated from the University of Toronto at Scarborough with a BA in English.

McCarthy's work has been exhibited and collected, both in public and in private art galleries in Canada and abroad.

Awards

She was honored with the Order of Ontario and the Order of Canada. She was honorary doctorate from the University of Calgary, University of Toronto, Trent University, the University of Alberta and the Nipissing University, honorary member of the Ontario College of Art and Design. According to her gallery was named in Toronto on the Scarborough campus of the University.
