Dorival Caymmi

Dorival Caymmi ( born April 30, 1914 in Salvador da Bahia, † 16 August 2008 in Rio de Janeiro ) was one of the most important Brazilian musicians.

Life

The son of an Italian immigrant and a black Baiana wrote numerous classics of Música Popular Brasileira ( MPB) as O Samba Da Minha Terra, Saudade de Bahia, Rosa Morena, Promessa de Pescador and O Vento.

Although he celebrates Bahia and its people in his songs and in the Brazilian consciousness is an epitome of Bahian culture, but he moved early to Rio de Janeiro, where he had success in the 1930s and has since remained. His first successful pieces he composed for the singer Carmen Miranda, including O Que é Que a Baiana Tem. For five decades, he composed, played guitar, sang and conducted bands and orchestras. For many musicians the Bossa Nova, the following Tropicalia and MPB, he was one of the most influential musicians.

Him joined a friendship with the famous writer Jorge Amado, which lasted until his death.

Dorival Caymmi died on 16 August 2008.
