Dothideales

Beticola beet with damage caused by Cercospora

The Dothideales are an order of Ascomycota.

Features

The types of Dothidiales are characterized by the fact that the asci have two cell walls. they are therefore called bitunicate asci. The asci grow through the stroma, which is a fruit body like hyphae and form so-called Loculae.

The Dothideales have smaller fruit bodies ( ascomata ) and less than the asci Pleosporales and have, in contrast to this, no Pseudoparaphysen.

Ecology

The species live on plant material, either as Saprobionten, Biotrophic or hemibiotrophic.

Some species, the "black yeasts ", live on moist plant surfaces and form anamorphs that are similar to the budding yeast ( Aureobasidium pullulans, Sydowia polyspora ).

System

Eriksson (2006) divided the order into two families:

  • Dothideaceae with 13 genera
  • Dothioraceae with 9 genera. This family is by Schoch et al. polyphyletic.
