Double overhand knot

The multiple overhand knot is a variation of (simple) overhand knot. Depending on the number of nodes turns he is also known as double overhand knot, triple overhand knot, four-time overhand knot called etc.. To name blood knot see section "Name and history."

The knot is very material-intensive, even as a double overhand knot it takes about 20 times the rope diameter. Suffered hard it can be hardly solved.

Name and history

According to Ashley, the double overhand knot is called a blood knot (blood knot ) when it is used on a nine-tailed cat or an ox whip. Burges mentions the name " blood knot" instead of the multiple overhand knot.

Application

  • The Franciscans use several successive knotted, triple overhand knot at her cincture the monk costume. This triple overhand knot is referred to specifically as a Franciscan node or as a " Capuchin node ".
  • The multiple overhand knot has several uses. At the end of rope pulled together to Abknoten, it prevents fraying of a rope; but permanently holds a Takling much better. As a stopper knot, the multiple overhand knot to prevent (especially the double overhand knot ) that a rope slipping through a loop ( " ausrauscht " ), or it can improve the tangibility of the rope. In addition, the node can be used as a lightweight throw node.
  • Tied into the rope multiple regularly, it serves as a substitute for a rope ladder. Alternatively wooden rungs can be pierced at the end and pulled the rope and knotted under the rung.
  • As an eye to the opening of a sack slung, this can be so close, it is secured with a simple overhand knot. The same, or similar with two windings and around a rod the Strangleknot ( Würgeknoten ) is linked by abok # 1239
  • Military award in axillary cords, Eng. " Honor Cord", French " Fourragère ".

Make Version I

The double overhand knot starts with a simple overhand knot and gets an additional winding. For a triple overhand knot a further winding is done, etc., these are then drawn simply. The Incas used the simplicity of the node to generate at Quipu an exact number so and permanently fix in one strand. The result is a node at which the coils rotate around a piece of rope / Part and another rope game outside running around the turns. The end is not quite parallel, but it is at a slight angle angle on " output nodes " from.

Make Version II

For multiple overhand knot must be helped during the knotting, to put the rope in the shape of the final node can usually get by "Version I". This can be complicated and time-consuming with many turns. When properly knotted multiple overhand knot only the turns are to be seen. This is most easily achieved if, for example, how the procedure is in the Franciscan knot. The desired number of turns / trips around the standing part is wrapped around and the conclusion will be the end of all trips ( from last to first cruise ) plugged in and hauled. The cable outlet is absolute parallel. The result is an "X -fold " overhand knot that wraps without an outer rope game to have the desired shape. It may happen, however, that the number of turns in numerous windings reduced by the contraction. For example, can be preserved ( by deforming upon contraction ) of 11 only 10 turns.

Producing a fishing - nail knot on the same principle

Three different techniques A = Franciscan nodes (nodes are parallel and in series ) B = throw node with 3, 4, and 5-series cruises C = Multiple overhand knot (after Quipu the number 3,4,5) - Stranger - node output

Image Description: (Version I ) The multiple overhand knot A ( here 5 -fold) caused by the production of B when it is contracted. If, however, begun at B at point s with 5 turns around the other strands (C further in yellow " winding direction " ) is produced by the coils D / trips by sT. However, this can be created - II easier and faster after - Knüpfversion. For heavy ropes can at point p to come twists, the place is pulled to the conclusion after pe.

Alternative node for the same purpose

  • The throw node and the Affenfaust are heavier.
  • For rope ladders Also the rope ladder is suitable node.

Modifications

  • Secured with a simple overhand knot gives the surgeon knot.
  • Have visual similarity with the same weaving technique as a loop of the cave node and the two-strand Bändselknoten and the double fisherman's knot as a connector.
  • Anglers use the same technique at the " nail knot " around its supporting hook on the fishing line to attach. The " nail " serves only as a placeholder / resources to form a tunnel, which is the lighter stick through the fishing line. - A match or larger rope diameters corresponding to a similar rod reaches the same purpose. With a low number of turns is also sufficient already a finger around the windings are out.
