Douglas William Jerrold

Douglas William Jerrold ( born January 3, 1803 in London, † June 8, 1857 there ), pseudonym Barnabas Whitefeather, was an English dramatist and storyteller.

Life

In German-speaking countries, the author has become known despite his complete works almost exclusively with Madame Kaudels curtains Sermons (1846), the Friedrich Gerstäcker with titles like When I was once stuck in the inn, Madame Kaudel plays down to how comfortable I would live if " their good mother " lived with us or as Madame Kaudel believed that it belonged to her - sorry - to celebrate our wedding anniversary had transferred congenially into German.

Among the most successful in his native works are next to it, although rarely performed, the dramatic works of Black-eyed Susan (1829 ), The Rent Day ( 1832) and his historical play about Thomas à Becket - even the short sketches of the collection Men of Character ( 1838) had a major impact, as the two sketchbooks Cakes and Ale (1842 ) and the short stories the Story of a Feather (1844 ), the Chronicles of Clovernook (1846 ), A Man made of Money (1849 ) and St Giles and St James ( 1851).

Besides Mrs Caudle 's Curtain Lectures Jerrold created with Punch's Letters to his Son (1843 ) is another classic of satirical short form.
