Draft horse

As cold-blooded horse breeds are known, which are characterized by a high body weight and a calm temperament and are used as heavy draft horses. Warm-blooded animals, however, are rather used as riding horses.

The term refers to characteristics and temperament of the animals, not body temperature. This is in all horses, warm-blooded animals and cold-blooded animals, ranging from an average of 38 ° C. All horses are mammals and the same cold-blooded animals ( Homoiotherm ).

Until the mid-20th century, the use of cold blood breeds like Dutch cold blood, Noric, Rhenish- German Cold Blood, Mecklenburg cold blood, Schleswiger, Black Forest cold blood, Shire Horse and Belgian has been widely used as work horses in agriculture and industry. Here especially their enormous wealth and their good nature were estimated. Cold-blooded animals are not suitable due to their heavy body type as fast riding horses.

Although the stock has shrunk since that time, he seems nevertheless secured in most breeds.

Cold blooded horses are today, still used in forestry, for example, as skidding horses, if the use of heavy machinery is not possible or not desired. They are also used as a recreational, Western and family horses.
