Meanwhile instruction texts have been translated to the dream yoga in Western languages.

Lucid dreaming

A skilled dream yoga practitioner becomes aware while dreaming that he dreams. He experienced the dream content aware ( lucid ) and may influence the action of his dreams; he also is aware of the " unreal " and volatile nature of the dream. In Buddhism, Dream Yoga gives the practitioner the opportunity to practice spiritual practice, during the phases - from the spiritual standpoint - usually useless elapse in a state of ignorance ( dream sleep). A lucidity during the deep sleep phase is connected to the yoga of clear light.

Techniques

It directs the consciousness while falling asleep on specific energy centers ( chakras ) of the body and visualizes colored light or mystical syllable (Sanskrit bija ). The falling asleep can be additionally used for the application of other techniques such as tantric mantra recitation or meditation visualization of deities. The correct practice requires dedication and careful guidance of a Vajrayana master, who is authorized within a lineage to pass on this exercise. The above-mentioned yoga of clear light, however, is associated with the Dzogchen practice.

Purpose and basic vision in a dream yoga

In Buddhist dream yoga is not about the content of dreams in terms of " Interpretation of Dreams", but mental clarity while otherwise unconscious phases; the ultimate goal is the experience of the true nature of the mind - the Buddha nature.

The ordinary life reality considered Tantric Buddhism similarly as " illusory ", a dream. It is the appearance of the phenomena in the waking state, according to this view, called a collective dream. The phenomena of the waking state appear similar to the phenomena in a dream in perception, but not unreal erroneously recognized by the ordinary observer as eventually, but as of ( inherently ) identifies itself out in existing phenomena.

The lucid dreaming is used in all phases of life reality the dream similarity, expressed or classic buddhist, emptiness ( Shunyata ) to recognize one's own self ( the personality constituent factors skandhas ) and all phenomena. Therefore, have in-depth experience in lucid dreaming nightly influence on the perception of the phenomena in the awake state during the day. Thus the techniques of clear dreaming is one aspect of a comprehensive spiritual enlightenment practice. In addition, the lucidity in the dream made possible to practice meditation practices. This is not least advantageous because the restrictions fall away through the physical body and it is easier to obtain certain results.

Another purpose is to prepare for death. The basic idea is that dreams are similar to the processes of dying and from events Nachtodzustand ( Bardo ) substantially. The experience of the dream similarity of the phenomena lifetimes, is used to learn the sometimes frightening visions of death and in Nachtodzustand as illusory, and so to recognize and attain liberation from the cycle of existence the true nature of mind.
