Drogo of Mantes

Drogo (franz: Dreux, † 1035 in Nicaea ) was a Count of Vexin, Amiens, Mantes in the 11th century. He was a son of Count Walter II the White.

Drogo maintained a close friendship with him to the neighboring Duke of Normandy Robert I the Magnificent. He married before 1025, the Anglo-Saxon princess Godgifu ( Goda ), who was a daughter of King Æthelred of Wessex and a cousin of the Duke. The Anglo-Saxon royal family was in Norman exile, since 1013 the Danes of Sven Forkbeard were landed on the British Isles. The marriage produced three sons were born:

  • Ralf the Scary († 1057 ), Earl of Hereford
  • Walter III. († 1063 ), Count of Vexin, Amiens, Mantes
  • Fulk ( † after 1077 ), Bishop of Amiens

1035 to Drogo joined the Duke Robert I on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Along with it he died on the way to Nicaea. As Orderic Vitalis reported rose in 1087 by William the Conqueror a claim to the Vexin, which now belonged to the French royal domain, due to its relationship with Count Drogo. The dispute over the Vexin presented the 12th century through a main point of conflict between the Dukes of Normandy and the kings of France dar.
