Drogo Sacramentary

The Drogo Sacramentary is a Carolingian illuminated manuscript, which was 850-855 in Metz. Authority of the Sacramentary was Archbishop Drogo of Metz ( 823-855 ), an illegitimate son of Charlemagne. It was intended for use in the cathedral of Metz. The style of the Metz manuscript illumination continued the Court School of Charlemagne.

The codex contains 130 parchment leaves, its format is 264 x 214 mm. The book decoration consists of 41 historiated initials, ie Swashes with figural scenic representations. The text is written entirely in gold ink.

The manuscript remained in the possession of the Metz Cathedral, until it was brought to Paris in 1802. Today, the magnificent manuscript is in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris ( Ms. lat 9428 ).
