Drosera brevifolia ( Syn: D. annua, D. leucantha ) is a carnivorous plant in the genus Sundew ( Drosera ). It was described in 1814 for the first time scientifically.

Description

Drosera brevifolia is an annual herbaceous plant that forms a basal rosette. Its leaves are sessile sitting and wedge-shaped. The flower stem is rather unusual for carnivorous plants short ( max. 15 cm). This bears in the spring up to 4 small white or pink flowers.

The plant specializes in wetlands, which dry out completely during the hot summer months. She sits by self-fertilization partly already in the unopened flower seeds on. After maturation of the seeds dried D. brevifolia and dies. The seeds germinate but again with the first rains, which use in the fall.

Dissemination

Drosera brevifolia inhabits moist habitats such as bogs and marshes. They are found in North America from Texas to Florida and north to Virginia. Barthlott et al. (2004) expand the area of ​​distribution also in Cuba, Mexico, Belize, Brazil and Uruguay.
