Drosophila lanaiensis

Drosophila lanaiensis is an extinct species of fly of the genus within the family of Drosophila fruit flies. She was endemic to the Hawaiian island of Lanai.

Features

The body length was 3.5 to 5 mm, the wing length 4 to 5.5 mm. The front head was reddish yellow, the eyes and the vertical triangle between them were brighter. The face glowed yellow and was not keeled. The proboscis and palpi were brown and lighter at the base. The sensors were dark yellow, with the top edge of the first two terms and the entire third member darker, sometimes dark brown, were. The thorax was yellowish with three brownish stripes. The middle stripe was sometimes unclear and between it and the side strip was located on each side of a hazy, very narrow dark line. The pleurae were yellowish with dark spots on the Mesopleura. The scutellum, the lower breast and the halteres were yellow. The abdomen was similar to the Drosophila conspicua, but the yellowish stains were not as pronounced and the ovipositor was longer and slimmer. The end member of the tarsi was dark.

Status

Drosophila lanaiensis is known only from five females that were collected in December 1893 in 610 meters height. 1986, the type of the IUCN was declared extinct.
