Dryanovo Monastery

The monastery Dryanovo ( Bulgarian Дряновски манастир " Свети Архангел Михаил " / Drjanoski manastir " Sveti Archangel Mikhail " ) is dedicated to the Archangel Michael, and is still used by monks. The Bulgarian Orthodox monastery is listed among the 100 national tourist objects in Bulgaria, which was created by the Bulgarian Tourist Office.

The Dryanovo Monastery is located around 5 km from the Bulgarian town of Dryanovo around 15 km from Gabrovo in the Oblast Gabrovo. The monastery is located in the central Balkan Mountains, in the canyon of Dryanovo River, a tributary of the Yantra. In the distance, is one of the largest caves in Bulgaria, the Bacho Kiro cave.

The monastery was founded in the 12th century but destroyed several times during the period of Ottoman Turkish rule ( 1393-1878 ) and killed the monks living in them, most recently during the Bulgarian April Uprising in 1876.
