Duchess Hedwig of Württemberg

Hedwig von Württemberg ( born January 15, 1547 Basel, † March 4, 1590 in Marburg) was a Princess of Württemberg by marriage Countess of Hesse- Marburg.

Life

Hedwig was the eldest daughter of the Duke Christoph of Württemberg (* 1515, † 1568) from his marriage to Anna Maria ( * 1526, † 1589 ), daughter of the Margrave George of Brandenburg -Ansbach.

She married on 10 May 1563 Stuttgart Landgrave Ludwig IV of Hesse - Marburg ( 1537-1604 ). As a strict Lutheran, she had significant influence on her husband, who thus remained with the Duke of Württemberg closely the religious network, but also with his brother Wilhelm fell into dispute, who wanted to unite all Protestant parties in Germany. Their marriage remained childless.

Hedwig is buried next to her husband under an epitaph with her statue in the Marburg parish church.
