Duke of Beaufort

Duke of Beaufort is a British hereditary title of nobility of the Somerset family in the Peerage of England. The name Beaufort refers to a castle in Anjou (France) - it's the only existing ducal title, which refers to a place outside the British Isles.

The family seat is Badminton House in Chipping Sodbury in Gloucestershire.

Award

The title was for Henry Somerset, 3rd Marquess of Worcester created by King Charles II in 1682. This was a descendant of Charles Somerset, 1st Earl of Worcester, an illegitimate son of Henry Beaufort, 3rd Duke of Somerset, a commander on the part of the House of Lancaster in Wars of the Roses.

The Dukes are descended from John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster, and King Edward III. in the male line, Beaufort Castle was the property of John of Gaunt.

Subordinate title

The Duke of Beaufort holds two other titles: Marquess of Worcester ( created 1642) and Earl of Worcester ( created 1514). Both titles are also included in the Peerage of England.

The eldest son and heir of the Dukes bears the courtesy title Marquess of Worcester, whose eldest son, those of the Earl of Glamorgan. His eldest son, that is a great-grandson of any security holder, takes the courtesy title Viscount Grosmont. The latter two tracks can not demonstrate concrete ceremony, so that it is different from the rule, not to subordinate title of dignity. The use, however, has established.

Another title

A branch line of the family is also the hereditary title Baron Raglan. He was awarded in 1852, Field Marshal Lord Fitzroy Somerset. This was the youngest son of the fifth Duke.
