Duke of Edinburgh

Duke of Edinburgh ( Duke of Edinburgh ) is a British peerage. He has been awarded since 1726 four times within the British Royal Family; the current carrier is Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II It is named after the Scottish capital Edinburgh.

Ceremonies

The title was first awarded on July 26, 1726 in the Peerage of Great Britain to Friedrich Ludwig of Hanover, the eldest son of George, Prince of Wales. When his father as George II King of Great Britain, was Friedrich Ludwig also received the title of Prince of Wales. After his death the titles passed to his son George. As this than George III. ascended the British throne, the title united with the British crown.

King George III. bestowed the title on November 19, 1764 his younger brother William Henry. Here, the title was changed, he was now Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh. After the death of William Henry the title passed to his only son, William Frederick. He died childless, and the title became extinct.

The next carrier, again exclusively as Duke of Edinburgh, was the second son of Queen Victoria, Prince Alfred, later Duke of Saxe- Coburg and Gotha. This ceremony took place in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. After the death of Alfred, who had no male descendant, the title became extinct again.

Last was the title of King George VI. awarded to their future husband Philip Mountbatten on November 20, 1947, the day before the wedding of his daughter Elizabeth II.

Future award

The British royal family announced at the wedding of Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, Sophie Helen Rhys- Jones, Prince Edward would later receive the title of Duke of Edinburgh.

He can claim the title but not inherit from his father, Prince Philip, as this is the absence of other provision on going with his award after his death to the eldest son, Prince Charles. Should Charles not be king at this time, he will be entitled, until it comes to the throne; then the titles merged with the crown and could be awarded to Prince Edward. If that should die before his mother 's dignity would pass to his eldest son Prince William.

Should Charles however already be king when his father died, the title would immediately unite with the crown and could readily be re- awarded.
