Dunans Bridge

The Dunans Bridge is a stone arch bridge over the river Ruel in the valley Glendaruel on the Scottish Cowal Peninsula. It forms the entrance to the listed castle Dunans Castle and can be reached via a branch of the A886.

John Fletcher, 3 of Dunans gave the Dunans Bridge in order. As an architect of the building was completed in 1815, possibly Thomas Telford was responsible for planning. In 1971 the bridge was inducted into the Scottish lists of monuments in the highest category A.

Despite progress Dunans Bridge is still in a good condition, it is registered as a vulnerable structure. As a starting point of endangering the vegetation on the bridge is given, which could weaken the substance. In addition, the abutment copings were not professionally repaired with cement. The owners give Dunans Bridge together with the castle want to restore.

Description

Built of rubble stone bridge leads into three pointed arches over the river. Here, the central sheet is wider and higher than the outer two. The road is bordered on both sides by a parapet, which is decorated with a cap of hewn stone. The bridge pillars have octagonal floor plan and close the top with a round caps from. Above the central arch are found on a recessed panel construction date and monogram.
