Dungiven

Dungiven ( Irish: Dún Geimhin ) is a town in County Londonderry in Northern Ireland near the Glenshane - mountain pass. The place is situated on the A6, the main route between Derry City and Belfast, and at the southern end of the A68 which connects Limavady Dungiven with. In Census 2001, the population of Dungiven was determined with 2993 people. Of these, 96.8 % Catholic, and 3.1% were Protestant. Dungiven belongs to Limavady District.

Most important historic sites are the remains of an Augustinian Abbey in the 11th century as well as the grave of the plant O'Cahan clan. Banagher Old Church is the ruin of the nave from the early 12th century.

  • Kevin Lynch (1956-1981), INLA member and Dead of the hunger strike of 1981. According to the Lynch Hurling Club is named from Dungiven.
