Duns Castle

Duns Castle is a castle in the Scottish Lowlands. It is located near the town of Duns in the county of Berwickshire in the Scottish Borders County.

History

Originally a 14th-century castle on the site of the present castle. This was to the 17th century in the possession of the Earl of Moray, but was sold in 1696 to William Hay of Drummlezier. Since then, Duns Castle is the residence of the Hay family, who can expand your system over the centuries several times. The present castle is a building from 1818 bis 1822. Was by Scottish architect James Gillespie Graham in the Scottish Gothic style, the Scottish variant of the Gothic Revival, designed. From the medieval castle now a residential tower is only obtained, which was integrated by Graham in the Neo-Gothic building. Duns Castle today

Duns Castle is now owned by the current Laird ( Scottish title, which roughly means squire ), Alexander Hay of Duns and Drummlezier, a retired accountant who also lives in the castle with his wife. The property can also be rented for weddings, receptions or as a backdrop for filming. The surrounding the castle park is also public. Inside the castle there are several rooms that span two floors, so that they reach a ceiling height of about 8 meters. The castle is surrounded by a very extensive grounds, which is owned by the Hay family as well. On the site there is a chapel and a manor house, both of which belong to the estate.
