Dupioni

Dupioni silk is one of the mulberry silk and has a somewhat irregular structure. The term " Dupion " derives from duplicato from Italian and comes from the fact that the silk is reeled from the cocoons of two silkworms who pupate together. Silk can be produced in India.

The fabric takes on textile dyes very well and achieved intense colors. It is therefore often used for evening wear ( eg clothes, scarves, bags) or for the home textiles sector (eg pillows, curtains, etc.).

Properties

Extraction

The yarn of silk dupioni from either:

  • Double cocoons (double cocoons = 2 caterpillars in a cocoon ),
  • A mixture of double - and single - reeling cocoons, or
  • Single cocoons are unwound, to match the look of Dupioni silk.

The strength of the silk threads is dependent on the quality of the silk. Thus one finds the dupioni in strengths of 100/120 bis 200/250 denier, with finer species are found.

Weave

Dupionstoffe are usually in the chain from raw silk and shot from the dupioni. The Dupioni silk in the weft is double-layered woven with a slight twist. The use of four-layer Dupionfäden is suitable rarely and only for heavy fabrics.

Qualities

The identification of good Dupionseiden is difficult. Even people who work daily with silk fail occasionally. Principle is to pay attention to the following when you purchase:

  • Color: The colors used should not contain toxic contents.
  • Error: Broken threads or thick nodes indicate poor machine.
  • Structure: The threads should not make waves. This is especially seen in fabrics, which was saved on material, so that you can sometimes by Garnlücken see through ( the shot ).
  • Weight: The silk should weigh from 75 grams per square meter.
