Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is a narrow gauge heritage railway with 914.4 mm (= 3 feet) gauge in the Rocky Mountains in the U.S. state of Colorado. The route runs to a length of 72 km between the towns of Durango and Silverton. The present museum route is a section of the former Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad.

The track is honored as a National Historic Landmark and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

History

The railroad from Durango to Silverton was completed in July 1882. She became known after a few years because of their spectacular awareness as a tourist attraction, and continued to be used after setting the freight in 1951 as passenger rail. Over time there a total of 18 movies were filmed. 1969 decided the Denver & Rio Grande Railway, shut down the route. However, it was bought by Charles Bradshaw Jr., who renovated thoroughly. 1985 bought the new company now also Lokdepot in Silverton and took it back into operation. 1986 already perverted four daily trains. Today it is traversed throughout the year with restored material.
