Durazno (also San Pedro del Durazno ) is the capital of the department of Durazno in Uruguay.

Geography

It is located in the central west of Uruguay in the southwestern part of the department near the border with the department of Flores. Your northern city boundary is formed by the Río Yi. At its opposite right bank adjacent to the city of Santa Bernardina. A few kilometers north-east lies Ombúes de Oribe. The distance to the southern provincial capital Montevideo is 183 km.

History

The town was founded on 12 October 1821 by the Portuguese as Villa San Pedro del Durazno in honor of the Emperor of Brazil.

Economy and infrastructure

The economy is marked primarily by agriculture and the processing of their products. 1874 the railroad reached the city of Durazno and turned it into a commercial zone and the connection between the north and the south of Uruguay. The Aeropuerto Internacional Santa Bernardina the city also has its own, partly used by the military airport.

Today, the historic center in the area is around the places Independencia and Sarandi, where you also find the oldest buildings in the region.

Special

To commemorate the discovery of America 400 years ago, built an Italian community a monument of granite in the top of which a ball is in the there are documents that are read only once every 100 years. When they opened the ball in 1992 and the documents read, it was learned that they deal with the wealth and the future of the province. 1992 new documents were included, which are only read in 2092.

Sports

In Durazno Durazno is the football club F. C. home, which is currently División in the second highest league in Uruguay, the Segunda plays.

Population

The city has 34 372 inhabitants (as of 2011), of which 16,608 male and 17,764 female.
