Durbe

Durbe ( German Durben ) is a city in western Latvia.

History

The city was first mentioned in 1260, when TOOK the Battle of the Durbe near the city. In the 15th century formed around the castle of the Teutonic Order a village. 1651 a stone church was built. Since the Great Northern War, the castle is destroyed. City rights were granted Durbe 1893, confirmed 1917. In 1925 the coat of arms is established, followed by a silver apple tree is to be seen, which is seen in Latvian folklore as a source of youth and compassion. From 1929 there was a railway station on the route Jelgava - Liepāja.

Durbes novads

2000 was the city with two surrounding communities, the administrative unit Durbes novads. 2009 occurred in two communities. In the district live 3401 inhabitants (as of 1 July 2010). The administrative center is located in Liege.
