Durnholzer See

The Durnholzer Lake ( Italian: Lago di Valdurna ) is a small mountain lake at the end of the valley of the Durnholzer valley in the Alps in South Tyrol Sarntaler. The lake is shaped like a triangle and is 900 meters long and 350 meters wide. It is fed by Seebach and Großalmbach as well as some sources at the bottom of the lake, the water flows out through the Durnholzer creek that empties into the Talfer. The water temperature of the lake is too cold for use as a swimming lake.

The lake is classified as oligotrophic, ie contains few nutrients and low organic production. Due to the low buffering capacity acidification of the water due to precipitation can not be excluded. The two tributaries above ground and ensure a high water exchange. There are extensive holdings of higher aquatic plants.

The lake is believed to have originated by a landslide the northwest side of the valley. Thus, the Durnholzer stream was dammed. For this development is the fact that the Seeabfluss behind the occluding bars of the lake has a fairly steep gradient and flows through boulders and boulders downhill.
