Game mechanics

Dust is set in the fictional world Falana, which is inhabited by anthropomorphic animals. The game world consists of two-dimensional planes. The player takes control of the title character Dust, trying to remember his past. Dust has a living sword, the blade Aharah. Fidget, the guardian of the sword, acts as the consort of Dust and can fire projectiles.

The player can find throughout the game power-ups, constantly changing the game mechanics, such as the ability to perform a double jump or climb to a previously unattainable level. The game also contains elements of role-playing games; Dust can collect experience points by defeating opponents and so ascend level. Thus, different values , such as hit points or magic points can be increased. The player can interact with non-player characters, buy or sell items and get quests.

Development

With the exception of synchronization, the soundtrack and parts of the story, Dust was entirely designed and programmed by Dodrill. An illustrator has, the earlier graphics for Jazz Jackrabbit 2 drawn by Epic Games. He calculated a development time of about three months, which was in effect for three and a half years. He had a Jump ' n' Run in 8- bit style originally planned, which should be similar to the early Castlevania titles. The inspirations for the final game came through titles such as Metroid, Golden Axe and Ys I & II, which Dodrill cites his favorite games.

The game was originally scheduled for the Xbox 360 Indie Games channel, however, won the 2009 Microsoft Dream.Build.Play Challenge and was rewarded with a release on Xbox Live Arcade. Dust: An Elysian Tail was originally scheduled for publication in late 2011, but was postponed to summer 2012.
