Breeding history

Mid-20th century there were the first KWPN horses, Dutch Warmbloods are thus still a very young breed. They arose out of the existing Dutch Groninger horse breeds and Gelder. In addition, always thoroughbreds were bred. Even today, most of KWPN horses have a high proportion of whole blood. The slightly heavier Groninger helped that today's KWPN horses are characterized by great power and therefore also very suitable as riding horses. The lighter built Gelder gave the KWPN horse jumping ability and ease. Finally, an all-round sports horse that is very resistant and has excellent features emerged. The jumping ability of the horse and the expansive transitions make the still very young breed a very popular sport horse for many sectors of the equestrian sports ( show jumping, dressage, eventing, driving ). The KWPN horse wins in the U.S. increasingly popular. General KWPN horses are also considered as very robust with respect to violations.

One of the most famous sires is Nimmerdor, which was scheduled in Los Angeles due to his international success for the jumping competition of the 1984 Summer Olympics. Its owners, however, decided against his participation and for its use as a breeding stallion. Nimmerdor died in 2003 at the age of 31 years.

The dressage horse with the highest price ever paid for such a horse, the KWPN horse Totilas is. It is used both in tournaments and in the breeding (2012 version).

There are three directions of the KWPN breeding:

  • Jumping and dressage horse ( spring -en - dressuur paarden )
  • Light draft horse ( Tuig - paarden )
  • Gelderland ( Gelderland paarden )
