Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the butterfly is 31 to 40 millimeters, whereas the females are slightly smaller. The ground color of the wings varies from whitish to gray to brown. The outer transverse line on the fore wings is formed of dark spots and formed strong. The inner transverse line is similar to the outer, but is indicated only weak in some specimens. The center stands out clearly. On the hind wings the dark outer transverse line of the front wing in a weakened form continues. Again, the focus is clearly pronounced. The seams of all the wings are finely dotted black.

Egg, caterpillar, pupa

The egg has an oblong oval, slightly flattened shape. It initially has a pale yellow color and takes later gray -brown or gray -violet tints.

Full-grown caterpillars are dark brown, red-brown or gray -brown color, show a discontinuous whitish ridge line and are mottled gray on the sides. At the end of the body there is a bump after two and after extensions. It is characterized by a white line on the feet before the Nachschiebern.

The doll is elongated and has a short cremaster.

Similar Species

Very bright copies of the heather - spot tensioner resemble other Dyscia species, in particular Dyscia conspersaria and Dyscia raunaria. In these species, however, the transverse lines and center points are weaker.

Distribution and habitat

The species occurs mainly in the northern and central Europe eastwards to the Urals before. They settled predominantly sandy heaths.

Way of life

The heather - Fleckenspanner usually forms one generation per year, the butterflies are to be found in May and June. They are active at dusk, at night, however, appear only occasionally on artificial light sources. The caterpillars live on heather (Erica ), in Germany they take heather ( Calluna vulgaris) as a food plant on.

Endangering

The heather - Fleckenspanner is out in Germany on the Red List of endangered species in category 1 ( extinction ).
