Dzyarzhynsk

Dsjarschynsk or Dzerzhinsk (White Russian Дзяржынск / Dsjarschynsk; Russian Дзержинск / Dzerzhinsk; polish earlier Kojdanów ) is a Belarusian town in the Minsk Woblasz, 40 km west of the Belarussian capital Minsk, with 25 164 inhabitants ( 31 December 2009). It is named after the Soviet revolutionary, Felix Dzerzhinsky.

Geography

In Dsjarschinsk the Dsjarschynskaja Hara are with the highest elevation of the country ( 345 m).

History

Before the Second World War, which was still Koidanow (White Russian Койданаў ) called Dsjarschynsk one of the westernmost towns of the former Soviet Union. Here lived a Polish minority, for an autonomous district was established. During the Stalinist purges almost all male relatives and many women of this ethnic group were killed, while a small rest of the population was deported.
