Earl Cathcart

Earl Cathcart is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It is run by the family Cathcart.

The family seat is Gateley Hall Fakenham in Norfolk. The former family seat Cathcart Castle in Glasgow was not inhabited for several centuries, the remains had to be demolished in 1980 due to disrepair.

Award

The title was created on 16 July 1814 William Cathcart, 1st Viscount Cathcart. This was an important soldier and diplomat in the time of the Napoleonic Wars.

Subordinate title

The Earl Cathcart carries the subordinate title Viscount Cathcart, of Cathcart in the County of Renfrew, (awarded 1807) and Baron Greenock, Greenock in the County of Renfrew of, (awarded 1807) and Lord Cathcart (awarded in 1460 ). While the first two titles are in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, the latter part of the Peerage of Scotland.

The dignity of Lord Cathcart was 1447-1460 awarded to Sir Alan Cathcart.

The heir takes the courtesy title of Baron Greenock.
