Earl Cowley

Earl Cowley is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, which is supported by a branch of the Wellesley family.

Award

The title was for Henry Wellesley, 2nd Baron Cowley, created in 1857. This was a nephew of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, and of Richard Colley Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley. He had been five years previously, worked more than 30 years in the diplomatic service and the time of collection to the Earl the most important diplomatic office in his country, namely that as ambassador in Paris. He should remain in that post ten more years.

Subordinate title

The subsidiary title of the Earl Cowley are Viscount Dangan, Dangan of in the County of Meath ( created 1857) and Baron Cowley of Wellesley in the County of Somerset ( created 1828); both also belong to the peerage of the United Kingdom.

The title of Baron Cowley was the father of the first Earl, Henry Wellesley, lent, who had also been ambassador and diplomat.

The eldest son of the Earl takes the courtesy title Viscount Dangan (* 1965).
