Earl of Harewood

Earl of Harewood is a British peerage in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, which is run by the family Lascelles.

Ancestral home of the family is Harewood House in West Yorkshire.

Award

The title was first awarded in 1812 to Edward Lascelles, who was appointed in 1796 to Baron Harewood. He had become rich through the cultivation of sugarcane in the Caribbean and one of the largest slave owners there.

The barony had previously been once given to a relative, namely Edwin Lascelles in 1790, however, even without male heirs died five years later.

Subordinate title

The subsidiary title of the earldom are: Viscount Lascelles ( created 1812) in the Peerage of the United Kingdom and Baron Harewood, of Harewood in the County of York ( created 1796), in the Peerage of Great Britain.

The former title is led by the eldest son of the respective Earls as a courtesy title.

  • The title is " Harwood " pronounced.
  • The present Earl is a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. His mother Mary, Princess Royal was a daughter of King George V.
