Earl of Lytton

Earl of Lytton is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, named after the family Bulwer- Lytton.

Ancestral home of the family is Knebworth House at Knebworth in Hertfordshire.

Award

The title was created for Robert Bulwer- Lytton, 2nd Baron Lytton, in 1880. This had previously been Governor-General and Viceroy of India.

Subordinate title

With the earldom the title of Viscount Knebworth was awarded the same time, which also belongs to the peerage of the United Kingdom. He is led by the heirs title as a courtesy title.

The father of the first Earl, Edward Bulwer- Lytton, was a prominent member of Parliament and writer. He became a baronet in 1838 ( of Knebworth ) and raised in 1866 for Baron Lytton. These titles are Baronetage and Peerage of the United Kingdom.

The fourth Earl, Noel Lytton, inherited in 1957 by his mother Judith Blunt - Lytton, 16th Baroness Wentworth, the title of Baron Wentworth, who also is now a subordinate title of Earl of Lytton. This dignity that belongs to the Peerage of England, was created in 1529.
