Earl of Malmesbury

Earl of Malmesbury is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of Great Britain, named after the town of Malmesbury, which is supported by the Harris family.

Award

The title was awarded in 1800 to the British diplomat James Harris, who had been already raised in 1788 as Baron in the peerage. This had been ambassador to various European countries as well as member of the House of Commons.

Subordinate items are Viscount FitzHarris, of Hurn Court in the County of Southampton ( created 1800) and Baron Malmesbury of Malmesbury in the County of Wiltshire ( created 1788).

The heir takes the courtesy title Viscount FitzHarris.
