Earl of Morton

Earl of Morton is a British hereditary title of nobility, which is supported by a branch of the Scottish Clan Douglas. The title belongs to the peerage of Scotland.

Ancestral homes of the family were among other Loch Leven Castle and Aberdour Castle.

Award

The title was in 1458 to James Douglas, 4th Lord Dalkieth awarded. The ceremony took place, as this Johanna, the deaf-mute daughter of King James I married.

Before the fourth Earl was executed for involvement in the murder of Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley in 1581, his earldom was revoked. 1586 the award in favor of his nephew the fourth Earl was renewed.

Subordinate title

Simultaneously with the earldom of the title Lord Aberdour was granted. He also belongs to the Peerage of Scotland and is managed by the heirs of each title as a courtesy title.

Another title

An ancestor, William Douglas, had been appointed in 1341 to the Lord Dalkieth. This was 1370 again explicitly confirmed. This title was first performed as a courtesy title of the heir title until it was sold together with the associated lands in 1642 from the seventh Earl of Francis Scott, 2nd Earl of Buccleuch.
