Earl of Portland

Duke of Portland was a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of England, named after the Isle of Portland in England, which was worn by the family Bentinck.

The family seat was Welbeck Abbey, Nottinghamshire.

Award

The title was in 1716 to Henry Bentinck, 2nd Earl of Portland awarded. This was an important first deputy in the lower house, and later in the House of Lords.

The family changed their surname later in Cavendish Bentinck.

Subordinate title

Subordinate title of Marquess of Titchfield Dukedom were ( created 1715 ), Earl of Portland ( created 1689), Viscount Woodstock ( created 1689) and Baron Cirencester ( created 1689). While the former title also belonged to the Peerage of Great Britain, all the other titles of the peerage of England were assigned.

The eldest son and heir of the Duke led the courtesy title Marquess of Titchfield.

Another title

In 1880, Augusta Cavendish Bentinck, the stepmother of the sixth Duke of the title Baroness Bolsover, of Bolsover Castle was in the County of Derby, granted. After her death, the sixth Duke inherited the title, but it was extinguished with the death of the seventh Duke in 1977.

After the death of the ninth Duke of the title became extinct in 1990. A distant relative, descended from a younger son of the father of the first Duke, followed only as Earl of Portland.

From the downstream tracks went out that of the Marquess of Titchfield, while the 1689 -created tracks will be performed as subordinate title of Earl of Portland.
